Why can`t dvds all have the same ratio?
I just brought a new 37 inch tele, then a few days later i decided to rent 4 movies out of Blockbuster. Heres all their different ratios `The Unborn` 2.40:1
`A Perfect Getaway` 2.35:1
`Sorority Row` jus` 16:9
`Orphan` 1.78:1
When i watched `The Unborn` and `A perfect Getaway`, there was two black borders, one at the bottom and one at the top!, It felt like my tele had become a 20 inch, My tele has zoom function which i used to make the movies take up all the screen, but then another problem, i noticed i was`nt seeing things that were suppose to be on far left or far right of the screen. So iwas forced to watch these films with the borders. I mean if wide screen teles are wide screen, whats with the borders?

It’s the way that they are shot, they all use different cameras. For example, Star Trek was shot in anamorphic widescreen, and The Dark Knight was shot on tall IMAX cameras. Each movie has it’s own ratio simply because they are shot differently.

That’s how they are released to the cinema. Movies don’t all have the same ratio at the cinema and the encoders try to keep the DVD content as close to what u see at the cinema.
